NATIVE WILDFLOWERS/SHORELINE PLANTS GIVEAWAY 2009

 

PLANTS FOR SUNNY OR PARTLY SHADY SPOTS:

Wet soil or in water:
Sweet Flag (Acorus calamus), 1-3’ tall, insignificant yellowish flower, smells great!

Common Arrowhead (Sagittaria latifolia), 3’ tall, white flower.

Normal to wet soil-perfect shoreline conditions:

Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis), 2-5’ tall, red flower.

Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), 1-4’ tall, blue flower.

Orange Coneflower (Rudbecka fulgida), 1-3’ tall, orange flower.

Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohioensis), 2-4’ tall, blue flower.

Michigan Lily (Lillium michiganese), 5’ tall, orange flower.

Mistflower (Eupatorium colestinum), 2’ tall, blue flower.

Monkey Flower (Mimulus ringens), 1-3’ tall, violet flower.

Northern Blue Flag (Iris versicolor. Photo taken by Danielle Langlois in July 2005 at the Forillon National Park of Canada, Quebec, Canada), 1 ½ -2 ½’ tall, blue flower.

Prairie Blazing Star (Liatris pycnostachya), 2-4’ tall, purple-pink flower.

Turtlehead (Chelone glabra), 3-4’ tall, creamy white flower.

 

Normal to Dry Soil- A little further back along the shoreline:

Blue Wild Indigo (Baptisia australis), 2-4’ tall and wide, blue flower.

Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja coccinea), 2’ tall, red and yellow flowers, can have fairly wet soil too.

Path Rush (Juncus tenuis), 1 ½’ tall, green with a brownish flower

Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), 2-4’ tall, rosy- pink flower.

Wild Lupine (Lupinus perennis), 1-2’ tall, blue-purple flower.

 

PLANTS FOR SHADY SPOTS:

Wet Soil:

Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris), 19”-30” tall, yellow flower, can have full sun too.

Normal to Wet Soil-A little further back along the shoreline:

Smooth Petunia (Ruellia strepens), 3’ tall, lavender flower.
