Welcome to the 14th Annual Bay Lake Ice Out Contest!

This year I am a bit late in starting the contest since I was unsure if I wanted to run it again this year...

Last year it came to my attention that over the past few years there has been some dissention about the dates that I/we have called as the Bay Lake Ice Out.

I started this contest 14 years ago as an escape from winter and for some fun.  Over the years the prize has been provided by myself, and a few other Bay Lake folks who give generously for the prize! (Thanks Josh, Amy, and Greg Lange – Bonus points if you remember the great Bay Lake wood maps he made for us!)

Over the years as the ice out date neared, I have been lucky enough to have people from all over the lake spend time checking the ice and sending in reports (in fact some even came from all over the world from folks watching the webcam!) Without the help of this wonderful community it would never have been possible to pull this off each year.

While the data behind the ice out date is a community effort, its not a scientific one. The sole person responsible for calling the “official” date has been myself. If anyone has any arguments about that date I encourage you to contact me and not anyone else who may provide their valuable time and input.

This is just for fun, if you don’t agree with our decisions, you don’t have to enter.

Anyway, enough of that. I hope everyone will join the dedicated rag-tag group that does way more than they should to make Bay Lake such a great place and to provide content for this website that has truly been a labor of love for myself and a few others (take a bow Erickson family!) and who do way more than anyone knows. Finally, Bay Lake Improvement is in no way affiliated with the contest nor the website. We back them and their mission one hundred percent, but they are not responsible for anything we may post on BayLake.org

I hope everyone will join us in this contest and welcome in spring! Last year we had 181 entries to the contest! Let’s see if we can beat that!

Send your entry to us here BEFORE 11:59pm on April 1, 2015, or if you use an alternate method, please use the subject line “Bay Lake Ice Out 2015” That ensures that we don’t miss the entry! Please be sure to pick the date and time down to the minute. All entires are taken by order recieved, so if someone previously chose the same date and time (as noted by the email date I recieved it) to the minute you will be asked to change the entry. Entries are posted frequently but not immediately. I do my best to stay on top of them, but sometimes I lag a bit.
